Super-sub Isaac Mensah and Awako on target as Hearts of Oak coast to victory over Gold Stars

Having struggled in their first three fixtures, Hearts of Oak marked their return to the BetPawa Premier League with a 2-1 comeback win over Bibiani Gold Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium.

When play began there was the most frustrating start to Hearts of Oak’s top-flight return after CAF Confederations Cup early exit.

The first half of a few chances saw the Rainbows enjoy the best of the play, but they failed to take advantage when Prince Owusu chipped in the lead for the visitors.

Gold Stars looked to hit Hearts of Oak at home for the majority of the match, and they enjoyed some success when winning the ball high up the pitch.

The Phobians created several promising opportunities before the break and continued to press for an equalizer but were kept at bay by the guests.

However, the game was interrupted in the second half due to the rainfall but the referee recalled both sides to continue and added 20 minutes as additional time.

Having taken the lead in the first half, the visitors had a different performance in the second 45 as they failed to maintain their goal lead.

As the game progressed it became clear that Hearts of Oak were hungry to snatch the points. It was a feisty encounter between the two sides in a game that saw one Gold Stars player being sent off.

It took the Phobian’s 76th-minute and 88th-minute goals from Isaac Mensah who came from the bench and Gladson Awako to finish a 2-1 comeback victory for Slavko Matić’s side.

The leveler shifted the momentum of the match significantly, with the Rainbows sensing a full turnaround was on – and they completed it 12 minutes from the end.

The result means Hearts of Oak have claimed their first win in the Ghanaian top-flight under manager Slavko Matić.

They have moved to the 9th position with 5 points while Gold Stars sit 14th with three points. T
