Eric Maxim Choupo Moting Scored As Bayern beats Schalke 04

German champions Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga summit following a familiar 2-0 victory away at Schalke 04 – inflicting a 24th straight winless competitive H2H, with the hosts having last tasted a victory in March 2011 in the DFB-Pokal.

A clash between David and Goliath was never going to be dull, as both sides – sitting on opposing ends of the Bundesliga table – got off to an energetic start at the Veltins Arena. It was all Bayern from the start, as the reigning German champions took hold of possession in a bid to extend their six-match unbeaten run in competitive away games. However, Schalke proved surprisingly stern in their style of play.

As the half wore on, Die Königsblauen transitioned slowly onto the backfoot, with Leroy Sané banging a header goalwards, only for one of the defenders to make a timely interception. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting then forced Alexander Schwolow into a brilliant save off the near post with a header, before Julian Nagelsmann’s outfit upped the ante and drew first blood via Serge Gnabry. Jamal Musiala‘s exquisite backheel pass found the German forward in the box, and he drove in a low shot right past Schwolow minutes before HT. The goal meant that Schalke are yet to head into a home league break level this term, going into the second half in losing position for a fifth time in eight matches.

Schalke saw themselves concede a second right after the restart, by virtue of a terrific counterattack by the visitors that was capped off by Choupo-Moting’s wonderful finish into the left corner, putting Die Roten 2-0 up and en route to a 10th successive win across all competitions. Jamal Musiala thought he had ended Thomas Reis’ hopes of a comeback in the 67th minute with a brilliant individual effort, but his celebrations were subsequently halted with the offside flag going up.

Die Königsblauen struggled to pick themselves up in the final quarter-hour, failing to score a first H2H goal since February 2019 and succumbing to a ninth defeat this league season – they last recorded back-to-back wins in November 2019 under David Wagner. On the red front, Naglesmann equals Hansi Flick’s record of 10 wins in a row across all competitions set back in the 2020/21 campaign.
