Former Cameroon international Benjamin Moukandjo Bille has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
The erstwhile skipper of the Indomitable Lions announced his departure from the pitch on Sunday via Instagram, after 15 years as a professional footballer.
Moukandjo began his career at the Kadji Sports Academy and several years at the institution before moving abroad.
Courtesy of his glittering performances abroad, Moukandjo wormed himself into Cameroon’s squad at three Africa Cup of Nations, Two FIFA World Cups in 2010 and 2014 as well as the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Moukandjo’s highlight in the Indomitable Lions colors was in 2017, when he led his country to a fifth continental triumph in Gabon, after defeating the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 in the final.
The graduate from Cameroon’s youth team set up clinched 57 caps and scored eight goals for the Indomitable Lions between 2011 to 2018.
Sunday’s announcement draws a curtain on Moukandjo’s football career after he quit international football in 2018.
He remained active at Club level until one year ago when Greek side AE Larisa terminated his last professional contract.
At club level, Moukandjo began his career at the famous Kadji Sports Academy in 1998 alongside Qatar World Cup-bound defender Nicolas Nkoulou.
The playmaker switched to Europe in 2007. He first joined the reserves of French Side Stade Rennes. After a year he moved to the first team and subsequently played for a handful of French clubs including Monaco before moving to China and Greece in the twilight of his career.
Benji as he was fondly called finished his career with a total of 70 goals in 304 matches for 14 clubs and his country.
