International Friendly: Mohammed Salisu and Antoine Semenyo inspire Ghana to victory with debut goals against Switzerland

Mohammed Salisu and Antoine Semenyo inspired Ghana to victory as the Black Stars wrapped up preparations for the World Cup with a 2-0 triumph over the Swiss national team.

It was the debut goal from the England-based players for the Ghana national team.

The Dortmund trainer entered the game with a different setup. He handed Hearts of Oak star Afriyie Barnieh his maiden start and nearly won a penalty for Ghana in the first half.

Coming into the game with the likes of Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka, Shaqiri, Manuel Akanji and others, Switzerland was tipped as the favourite.

Otto Addo’s straight four substitutions, bringing in Antoine Semenyo, Kofi Kyereh, Kamal Sowah and Kamaldeen Sulemana, to replace Elisha Owusu, Afriyie Barnieh, Iñaki Williams and Jordan Ayew paid off as Salisu handed them lead with his first Ghana goal in the 69th minute.

Bristol Cities’ Antoine Semenyo added a second with a spectacular strike in the 74th minute. He volleyed the ball into the net to score his first Ghana goal

The Swiss national team entered the game after winning three consecutive matches, all of them in the UEFA Nations League, finishing in third place, surpassed by Spain and Portugal, but achieving permanence in League A.

They qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup after finishing top of Group A with 18 points, beating Italy, who finished second with 16.

The Black Stars also arrived with one defeat and one victory in September in which they suffered a 3-0 loss to Brazil and a 1-0 victory over Nicaragua.

Ghana struggled to qualify for the World Cup, finishing first in Group G as leaders with 13 points and with the same points as South Africa, besides beating them in the last match. While before getting the ticket to Qatar they had to play a play-off against Nigeria that ended in a draw and was decided by away goals.
