Can Vincent Aboubakar win the next African Footballer of the year award?

Cameroon’s talisman Vincent Aboubakar, has had a 2022 to remember, as he has put up probably one of his best stints for club and country.

The Al Nassr forward started the year in scintillating fashion, as he notch eight goals at the AFCON hosted in Cameroon between January to February 2022, to finish as the competition’s top scorer.

Consistent has been the key for the former FC Porto forward, who at a certain time appeared to have fallen down the pecking orders in Rigobert Song’s team. But when his services were need, the physically imposing and technically gifted goal poacher, delivered when it mattered most.

The 30 year old was arguably Africa’s best forward at the just ended 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar, as banged two goals and provided an assist in just in just 141 minutes played. His sensational chip against Serbia, epitomizes calmness, while his razor sharp header against Brazil was all Cameroon needed to break the African jinx against the Samba Boys.

Back at club level, the Garoua native has been instrumental for Al Nasser’s progress in the Saudi pro league.

In total, Aboubakar has scored plus 20 goals in the calendar year 2022 for club and country.

At 30, Aboubakar’s performance in 2022 might be enough to earn him an individual accolade, as he now looks favorite for the 2023 African Footballer of the year award. He finished in the top 10 in the race to the 2022 award that was won by Senegalese Sadio Mane.

For the 2023 award, Aboubakar will have to defy competition from some of Africa’s finest, like Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Yassine Bounou, Victor Osihmen, Khalidou Koulibaly who have aslo covered lots of grounds this year, for both club and country. – Cameroon
